The Italian IT outsourcing market is worth 2,965,000 € and is expanding at a 2005-2010 CAGR of 2.5%. IT outsourcing for SMEs is increasing rapidly, with a 2005-2010 CAGR of 8%, three times higher than the total growth rate. Another market experiencing significant growth is business process outsourcing (BPO). In 2006 the BPO market was worth 2,555,000 €, with a CAGR 2005-2010 of 6.4% distributed as follows:
- Finance & Accounting BPO: 2005-2010 CAGR 13.3%
- Procurement BPO: 2005-2010 CAGR 10%
- Customer Care BPO: 2005-2010 CAGR 5.9%
- HR BPO: 2005-2010 CAGR 4.6%
In recent years, Italian companies have found themselves operating in an unfamiliar market dogged by economic and political instability, as well as strong competition from emerging markets. This new climate is particularly critical for SMEs, which find themselves competing on an international market beset with high production costs and low-tech products. Information technology must adapt to this new climate by allowing for new production logics, while guaranteeing cost reductions and efficient operating structures. The complexity of managing heterogeneous infrastructures and applications is forcing companies to outsource their automation processes. In particular, SMEs are increasingly turning to suppliers who are capable of providing end-to-end services. CFOs are seeking out new ways to control and limit total cost of ownership. Medium-sized companies identify outsourcing as a strategy for generating innovation in their ICT solutions at the best market conditions. The market is now aware of the weaknesses and limits of the big players, which are caused by the vast scope of their organisations, financial constraints and the provision of over-standardised services.
Within this market climate a new type of supplier is emerging, one which is able to challenge the big players in the small to medium-sized market thanks to certain critical success factors:
- Ability to generate and sustain aggressive economies of scale
- Lightweight, efficient organisational structures with a wide spectrum of expertise
- Ability to provide comprehensive and scalable automation solutions
- Flexibility and adaptability
